ACTION ALERT! ACTIN ALERT! ACTION ALERT! ACTION ALERT!

U.S. PARK POLICE PROMISE CRACKDOWN ON ANTI-NUCLEAR PROTESTERS

On Wednesday the US Park Police entered Peace (Lafayette)
Park in Washington DC (across from the White House) and told the
peace activists who have maintained vigils there since 1981 that
they would be arrested on Thursday if they don't reduce their
personal property to "three cubic feet."

A 1992 National Park Service regultion (36 CFR 7.96)
requires that persons keep no more than 3 cubic feet of property,
including literature, weather protection, food, and other
necessities -- an mpossible request during winter months.

Most of the homeless persons who were also in the park have
been forced out.

The vigilers have refused to move, citing their
Constitutional First Amendmentright to freedom of religious
expression: "blessedare the peacemakers."

The last "sweep" of the park occurred on February 29, 1992
(prior to the March 5 publication of 36 CFR 7.96) ad resulted in
seven arrests and no prosecutions on a "campin" charge. The
"three cubic foot" regulation has never yet been used against the
vigilers.
