Food Not Bombs update sept 15 1993

HOMELESS MAN ARRESTED FOR EATING, Sept 14 6:45 pm

After Food Not Bombs served two buckets of soup
at Civic Center plaza, and had safely retrieved
the white buckets, police, who were present with
three patrol cars and two vans, made their move.
About 8 officers approached a weary looking
group of men who were standing around a trash
box. None of these men had served. After inquiring
about who was responsible, and receiving no reply,
the officers chose a young man, apparently at
random, based on his appearance, and cuffed him,
and put him in a van.
This outrageous behavior was apparently at
the behest of the mayor's DRIVER! One FNB member,
who was arrested on years old traffic warrant, was
present in Northen Station and overheard police
disguntled at being ordered around by the mayor's
driver. The driver had called Northen Station
to complain that Food Not Bombs was serving food.

HISTORY COMMITTEE ATTEMPTS TO RESOLVE DISPARITIES
The Food Not Bombs history committee is working
now to compile a list of names, dates, and charges
of arrested people. Some have counted as high
as 48 arrests since police action began on Sept 2.
I count 15 9/2, 7 9/3, 2 9/7, 2 9/8, 6 9/9,
3 9/13, and 2 9/14. I may have missed some lunch
arrests on 9/14. My total is then 37.

THE PRESS COMES BACK FOR MORE, ALIOTO CALLS COPS NAZIS
While Angela Alioto, long time supervisor,
daughter of ex-Mayor Joe Alioto, scion of San Francisco,
and once and future mayoral candidate, made a speech
about Matrix Operation on the steps of City Hall at
lunch on 9/14, FNB member Matt Dodd approached the
podium to bring attention to the fact that people
were being arrested across the street for feeding
people. The Channel 2 cameraman panned across the
plaza, recording the action of police. At this time
an officer attempted to arrest Dodd. This footage
was aired as top news story on 10 O'Clock News, and
this morning on Channel 2 morning show. Alioto
lost her composure a bit and shouted historical
epithets at SFPD Officers of Peace, refering to them
as members of the German National Socialist Party (?)
Alioto stated on Channel 2 News that Dodd would be out of jail
that day. We haven't confirmed Matt's whereabouts this
morning.

POOL JUMPING STRATEGY FAILS
On Monday Sept 13, Vincent Giacomini served lunch
at Civic Center only to find himself defending a bucket
of soup by standing waist deep in the Civic Center
reflecting pool. This strategy had been employed
the previous Friday, when Andy Rose stood off the
police for an hour and a half, and was allowed
to leave the area unencumbred. This time however
an African American SFPD officer was ordered to
remove his shoes and arrest the server. While
suffering shouts of "lackey", "robot", and
"strongman", the officer waded into the pool and
physically assaulted Vincent, who is now under
medical supervision.

KEITH MCHENRY COVERS THE RADIO
McHenry, in his jovial manner, had tons of fun
on KPFA, handling calls from supporters and
detractors alike. An eighty year old woman called
from the peninsula and wanted to come up and serve.
Gosh, I hope I'm that spunky at eighty.

RALLY CALLED FOR WEDNESDAY LUNCH
After making some delicious soup for hungry people
at my house this morning, we will join people
of like minds at Civic Center Plaza for a picnic-
demonstration. Come and eat, it's really neat.
Come and dine, it ain't no crime.
