BATON ROUGE -- Free bus service for displaced New Orleanians living in
the Baton Rouge area to travel between the two cities will be extended
through February because of its popularity, state officials announced
Wednesday.
The bus rides through the program known as LA Swift are sponsored by the
Federal Emergency Management Agency, which agreed to continue paying for
the service.
"The success of the bus service shows again how badly our people
want to work and rebuild their lives," Gov. Kathleen Blanco said in
a news release announcing the extension of the bus service.
The buses are available seven days a week, departing from the Capital
Area Transit System bus terminal in Baton Rouge. More than 3,000 free
rides have been provided.
