I'd have to contact my old climbing partners from then. I haven't been there in almost 7 years. A -- preceding the rating means I think it is easier than this. A ++ preceding the rating means I think it is harder. The Nixons Nose route is confusing. Some people believe it goes on the free route through the overhang, but when I first started climbing there in '77 I was told it refered to the aid route. Rumor has it the aid route has been free climbed but I think it's more confusion about between the two routes on the overhang. The aid route sticks out about 9-10 feet and is barely a crack. CAMPING The camping spot will hold many tents. There is almost no firewood for a long way, I personally don't build fires camping. I use a stove. The spring has never run dry in recent memory. I used to trust it, but I've seen too many idiots washing dishes or themselves in it. There is a major problem with white TP flowers everywhere. I prefer to take a short walk back towards the AT for this business. Trash is also a MAJOR problem. It is easy to fill several garbage bags with trash. We used to make day trips with big empty packs just to clean up. The sunsets are fantastic from the top of the rocks where the camping is. Pine Tree, 5.9 *** There are, of course, lots of other routes of a wide variety of grades. DIRECTIONS Drive up rt. 40 from Fredrick. You can also get to rt. 40 by taking the Middletown exit from I-70. Drive towards Hagerstown, MD. Park in the lot by the little picnic area. This park is literally a few hundred yards east of where rt. 40 crosses I-70. There are two accesses to the AT from here. One, in the up hill end of the lot there is a trail that goes under the rt. 40 bridge. The other trail is directly across the road, also from the uphill side. Both trails are only a few hundred yards until they met the AT. Hike north about 2 miles. The side trail to Annapolis Rocks is marked and is on the left. FOOD & DRINKS Go over I-70 and continue west on rt. 40. There is a bar with food. The food is typical bar food (not too bad) but the crowd can be wild on ocassion
