Project Of A Thousand Stories

Lower 9th Ward, New Orleans

November 2005. I witnessed a region still in the very beginnings of recovery. Twisted, muddied remains of status, wealth, and comfort gave a new poinantcy to the frailty of our time on the planet. It was difficult to photograph because the markers that allow a viewer to “understand” a picture--the placement of objects-- were scrambled. I saw a shrimp boat in the middle of a neighborhood street. Cars were on rooftops. Twisted wreckage from gutted buildings was piled nearly as high as the buildings themselves.

There were no birds. The area had a strange quiet.
